Balloon Chasers and Rose Smellers

David is on a break from school (from last Friday to the 4th of July). So we are enjoying the time together--the last bit we will have just the two of us for a long time.

Every summer, Tigard city puts on a balloon festival--the main attraction being that they launch Hot Air Balloons. Well, all growing up, David lived close to Tualatin High School--the location where these balloons landed after launching from the festival in the early morning. So we thought, rather than pay to see them launch, why don't we go find where they try to land on a giant target. Since the flights are early morning, we packed a picnic breakfast, got up early and headed out to the Tualatin High School.

Little did we know that in recent years they have started changing the landing location. There were no balloons landing at Tualatin HS, and we saw the balloons still in the air, much further south when we got there. We learned that they gave the balloon pilots GPS coordinates to the landing spot, and no one was really sure where it was. Well, we didn't want to waste a good morning, so sat down in the grass anyway, ate our picnic breakfast, and watched as more balloons flew over the top of us. Then, because we could, we decided to try and find out where exactly the balloons were landing--so we started chasing the ones we could still see in the air.

We ended up much further south than we expected, by a tiny air strip in Aurora, OR. But we found the spot, and saw several landed balloons and even saw one balloon land a little too quickly and the basket topple over when it hit the ground. That made us laugh. Here are some pictures of our chasing.

Portland is nicknamed the Rose City, and for good reason--roses flourish here. We decided to go and visit the Portland Rose Garden on Monday afternoon. It was a perfect day for it, and the garden was gorgeous! Here are some pictures from the adventure.
